The tiny pistol shrimp, also known as the snapping shrimp, generates one of the loudest sounds in the ocean by snapping its claw, creating a cavitation bubble that briefly reaches temperatures of over 4,500°C and emits a flash of light.
This extraordinary phenomenon, known as sonoluminescence, occurs when the rapidly collapsing cavitation bubble generates immense pressure and heat, creating a temporary shockwave and a brief burst of light. The powerful snap also produces a sonic boom strong enough to stun or kill small prey, making the pistol shrimp a formidable predator in coral reefs. The sound produced can exceed 200 decibels, louder than a gunshot, making it one of the loudest sounds made by any animal in the ocean. This incredible ability is used for hunting, defense, and even excavating burrows, showcasing a marvel of biomechanical engineering.
