Porsche's First Hybrid Was From 1900!
Long before the Prius became a household name, Ferdinand Porsche unveiled the Lohner-Porsche Mixte Hybrid in 1900, creating what is widely considered the world's first functioning hybrid electric vehicle.
This groundbreaking vehicle wasn't just a concept; it featured a gasoline engine that drove a generator, which in turn powered electric motors located in the wheel hubs. This innovative 'series-hybrid' design, developed when Porsche was only 25, allowed for significant range and also incorporated four-wheel drive and four-wheel brakes—features that were extraordinarily advanced for its era. While commercial success was limited due to high cost and complexity, it laid a foundational blueprint for future automotive technology, demonstrating Porsche's visionary approach to engineering.
