Space's Sticky Secret: Metals Fuse Without Heat in Vacuum
Did you know that in the vacuum of space, two clean pieces of the same type of metal will spontaneously and permanently fuse together without any heat? This phenomenon, called cold welding, happens because there's no air or oxidation to prevent the atoms from bonding.
On Earth, metal surfaces are always covered by a thin layer of oxidized material, which acts as a barrier to atomic bonding. However, in the ultra-high vacuum of space, this protective layer is absent. When two atomistically clean metal surfaces come into contact, their atoms perceive each other as part of the same bulk material and form a single, continuous metallic bond. This poses significant challenges for spacecraft engineering, as moving parts made of similar metals could seize up if they touch, requiring careful material selection or the use of intermediary layers.
