The Original Gas Car: Not Who You Think?

The Original Gas Car: Not Who You Think?

Did you know? While Karl Benz is widely celebrated for the first practical automobile, an Austrian-German inventor named Siegfried Marcus built and drove gasoline-powered vehicles decades earlier, with his second car operating as early as 1875.

Marcus's first rudimentary vehicle in 1864, using a two-stroke engine, was groundbreaking. However, his 1875 'Marcus Car' stands out as the world's first gasoline-powered car featuring an internal combustion engine, electromagnetic ignition, and an evaporative carburetor. This innovative design predates Benz's patent motorcar by a decade, making Marcus a true pioneer. Despite his critical contributions, Marcus never sought automotive patents nor commercialized his inventions, leading to his lesser-known legacy in automotive history.
