DID YOU KNOW…
The Penny Paradox: Costlier to Make Than Its Value?
Surprisingly, the U.S. Mint frequently spends more money manufacturing a single one-cent coin than the coin's actual face value, resulting in a net loss on each penny produced.
For example, in fiscal year 2022, it cost the U.S. Mint approximately 2.72 cents to produce each penny, nearly triple its face value. This peculiar economic inefficiency is driven by fluctuating raw material prices, particularly for zinc and copper, and the fixed costs of the minting process. Despite the financial drain, the penny persists due to strong public sentiment, its utility in rounding cash transactions, and advocacy from industries that benefit from its continued existence. Debates about its elimination, mirroring actions in countries like Canada which have phased out their lowest denomination coins, continue to surface.
