Ancient Stoic philosophers didn't just advocate for resilience; they actively practiced *praemeditatio malorum*, or 'premeditation of evils,' by envisioning worst-case scenarios to steel themselves against future misfortunes and appreciate the present.

This unique Stoic exercise involved deliberately imagining the loss of loved ones, health, wealth, or freedom. The goal wasn't to induce anxiety but to confront fears head-on, reduce the shock of actual adversity, and cultivate a deep sense of gratitude for what one currently possesses. By mentally rehearsing difficulties, Stoics aimed to realize that many feared outcomes are survivable and that true happiness stems from internal virtue, not external circumstances.
