These Sea Slugs Decapitate Themselves to Grow a Whole New Body!

Imagine losing your entire body and growing a new one from just your head! Certain sea slug species, like *Elysia marginata*, possess this astonishing ability, voluntarily detaching their heads and regenerating a complete, fully functional body within weeks.

This extreme form of autotomy, where an animal discards a body part, was first observed in 2021. The isolated head not only continues to crawl and feed for weeks, but it also harnesses chloroplasts from consumed algae to photosynthesize, sustaining itself until a new body develops. Scientists believe this remarkable regeneration strategy allows the sea slug to escape parasites or diseases that have infected its old body, effectively starting life anew with a pristine physique.
