What Does Space Smell Like? Astronauts Say It's Like Burnt Metal & Raspberries!
Despite being a vacuum, astronauts returning from spacewalks report a distinct, pungent aroma clinging to their suits and equipment, often described as a mix of hot metal, seared steak, raspberries, or even rum.
This peculiar smell isn't from space itself, as a vacuum can't carry odor molecules. Instead, it's believed to be the scent of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that have adhered to the surfaces of spacesuits and tools. These complex organic molecules are common in the universe, formed by stars and found in nebulae. When equipment is repressurized inside the spacecraft, the PAHs oxidize in the presence of oxygen, releasing their unique scent, offering a rare sensory glimpse into the cosmos.
