WWII's Secret Weapon: Bomb-Carrying Bats?

WWII's Secret Weapon: Bomb-Carrying Bats?

During World War II, the United States seriously explored using Mexican free-tailed bats as a unique incendiary weapon, outfitting them with tiny time-delay bombs to unleash over Japanese cities.

Code-named 'Project X-Ray,' the concept originated with Lytle S. Adams, a dental surgeon, who believed bats could fly into inaccessible areas of Japanese wooden buildings before their bombs detonated. Tests in New Mexico showed promising results, with bats successfully roosting and causing fires, even accidentally destroying a general's car and a control tower. Despite its initial promise and support from figures like President Roosevelt, the project was ultimately deemed too complex and slow to deploy. It was eventually overshadowed by the development of the atomic bomb, which offered a more immediate and decisive strike.
