Chrysippus: The Stoic Philosopher Who Laughed Himself to Death
One of the most influential Stoic philosophers, Chrysippus, is famously said to have died from a fit of laughter after witnessing his donkey drink wine and then attempt to eat figs. It's a rather un-Stoic end for a man dedicated to reason and control.
Chrysippus (c. 280 – c. 207 BC) was so central to Stoicism that it was famously said, 'If Chrysippus had not existed, the Stoa would not have existed.' His prolific writings refined Stoic logic and ethics, making him second only to Zeno of Citium in importance. The bizarre anecdote of his death, recorded by ancient biographers like Diogenes Laërtius, suggests that even the most disciplined minds can be overwhelmed by absurdity. While its literal truth is debated, the story serves as a memorable, if apocryphal, tale highlighting the human element even in rigorous philosophical schools.
