Did you know? WWII's Secret Bat Bombs: A Fiery Plan Gone Awry
During World War II, the United States seriously developed 'bat bombs,' a top-secret weapon designed to attach tiny incendiary devices to millions of Mexican free-tailed bats, intending them to roost in Japanese cities and cause widespread fires.
The 'Project X-Ray' concept was championed by dental surgeon Lytle S. Adams, who proposed using the bats' natural ability to fly into buildings and roost in inaccessible spots. Each bat would carry a small napalm-like incendiary timer, set to ignite after the bats had dispersed throughout the wooden structures common in Japanese cities. Although trials showed promising results, including a test where the bats accidentally torched a hangar and a general's car, the project was ultimately canceled in 1944 in favor of the atomic bomb, but not before millions of dollars and countless hours were invested in this bizarre biological weapon.
