Epicureanism: Not About Lavish Feasts, But Serene Simplicity

Epicureanism: Not About Lavish Feasts, But Serene Simplicity

Despite the modern association of "Epicurean" with luxurious indulgence, the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus himself advocated for a life focused on simple pleasures, intellectual pursuits, and deep friendships, not excessive sensual gratification.

Epicurus founded a school of philosophy in Athens around 307 BCE, teaching that the ultimate goal of life was *ataraxia* (freedom from fear) and *aponia* (absence of bodily pain). He believed that true happiness came from a tranquil mind, fostered by contentment with basic needs, a circle of trusted friends, and philosophical reflection. He warned against the pursuit of lavish pleasures, arguing that they often lead to greater pain, anxiety, and unhappiness in the long run, making his philosophy a guide to modest living rather than indulgence.
