The Bear Who Became a WWII Soldier and Carried Artillery Shells
A Syrian brown bear named Wojtek was officially enlisted as a soldier in the Polish Army during World War II, where he helped carry heavy artillery shells and even rose to the rank of corporal.
Adopted as a cub by Polish soldiers in Iran, Wojtek traveled with the 22nd Artillery Supply Company through the Middle East to Italy. He distinguished himself at the grueling Battle of Monte Cassino by fearlessly moving heavy ammunition crates, a task usually requiring four men. This act earned him a promotion and cemented his status as the company's beloved mascot and a unique symbol of their resilience. After the war, Wojtek retired to Edinburgh Zoo, remaining a celebrated figure and a testament to the unusual bonds forged in conflict.
